Blog in one spot.

so i spent about an hour yesterday compiling 3 years of blogs into on spot. none of these said, blogs, have ever amount to more than 5-10 post, so this wasn't a huge undertaking. everything has a label of august 19, even though there are post on here from 2005. the latest posts in the string are from the blamblam tumblr bloget. i just didnt like that smaller format idea, so now its here also.

i'm tired this mornin', need an espresso to wash down the heartburn i had while trying to sleep last night.

Headed Out

It's time to get on the road.
9AM.
on the road with a short stop by Lombard St. for Tanil.
Across the Golden Gate
Up the 101 in and through wine country with a stop of Seghasio Winery.
Nothing like a wine tasting at 10am on Monday Mornin.

Back in the car and veering west at he 128 through Mendo and towards Booneville and the Coast.
Thought about stopping here a Schramsberg Winery but probably would not have been able to do remainder of the drive that day.

Philo went by in a blink.

Ft. Bragg for lunch at the North Coast Brewery but the restaurant was closed on Monday and Tuesday. What kinda backwards town doesn't have there ale house open everyday. Just Kidding. Seriously Though.

Tried to stop again up the street for lunch, BANG. Closed at 2:30, and its 2:30 on the dot.

So we needed food, and started to need a restroom before heading back into the 101 at Leggit.

Grabbed a pretty good burrito and some drinks at the a small market, but no bathroom for customers, and there didn't seem to be a bathroom anywear. Was thinkin about goin out in the open, but just didn't feel good about with people around and about, though not a lot of them. Well, I started to lose my cool, freaking out about why in the hell there are no bathrooms around, proceeding to drive us furthur up the road and onto 101 till we found one. Soon enough things worked out, I woofed down my burrito and we both got a needed bathroom break. Its a good thing when your traveling companion can laugh off any bit of seriousness that an impending meltdown may carry. Thanks God for that.

So with a bit of waning anxiety we make it into the Redwoods and towards our destination in Honeydew, CA. Off the 101 and up through these massive redwoods and down lane and half wide roads into the Mattole River Basin and Honeydew. It was like falling into a world i never knew existed. A friend had compared it the Shire, and its exactly what I would have thouhgt the Shire may llok like. Rolling hills, pastures, a wonderful river with a flood plain that prehistoric. Our little cabin at the Mattole River Organic Farm was small, a wee bit smaller than our first apartment. Rustic. Way Rustic. We settle in with some grub we picked up down the road. Had some organic beers and Tanil a bit of leftover wine from the city and we were spent.

Night Night.

Fast Foward

Fast forward to a town that doesn't exist.
Whoa!

San Francisco

so we are back home, have been for a week now. and now i'm gonna go back through our journal and post some of what we did and saw for all y'all to check out. got some pics for you also. i'm gonna get tanil on here to write some also....hopefully. if your not good at reading or just plain dont care click here to go straight to pictures of the San Francisco leg of our trip.

We got into San Francisco late afternoon on the 30th March, 2007. Grabbed our bags and headed down to catch a cab. Crap, forgot to get bus passes. Tanil goes in to secure those. Too bad we didn't get our full value out of them, but oh well. Cabbed it down to our apartment for the weekend, yeah thats right, no hotel, an apartment, in this sweet Victorian, set right on historic Alamo Square. Word!

Well that afternoon didnt consist of much but walkin to the nearby organic mart, and across the street for some beers and wine to fill the frig. On the way back we spotted a lil Nepalese restaurant. After droppin off the goods, we walked back to the cafe and got a late bite to eat. Capped off the night with some wine.

Saturday mornin found us walkin in towards town and then hoppin on a bus which took us all the way, or at least a few blocks from, the recently renovated Ferry Building. Great market there with tons of people watching, and plenty of wild folks to help take your money. Caviar bar, bathrooms, and over priced oysters, but damn were they good. North Coast Brewing Comp. beers on tap, thats a plus. Strolled on up and meandered our way into North Beach via the Peter Macchiarini steps.

North Beach, cool. Tanil got some time in Chinatown dollar store, her heaven on earth next to TJ Max. Caught a relaxing tea shop heading out of the madness that is Chinatown. Short stroll with a stop to write in the journal, and then a cable car ride on the California line all the way to Polk. Polk holds a longtime friend of San Francisco, Swan Oyster Depot. You'll just have to go to understand what this place holds. A sizable line on the street while you drink a brew, waiting for one of the 15+ seats at the bar. Yum Yum Yum. So far, we have walked, eaten, walked, drank, eaten, drank, walked. Not a bad day. After a nice stroll into the sunset back to the apt., we huff it even further around the block to lower Haight to met up with some friends at Toronado. Seeing good friends in great places rocks, and this place has more beer than you can dream of. After a good while here, we needed to split and head to another Friends house before we made our way over to the Fillmore Auditorium to see MOFRO. Vacation and catchin your favorite band. You can't beat that.

Well the night was long and the show was great. Included were some great walks to and fro the club, chatting up things and havin a cold brew on the cold cold streets of California. The next mornin consisted of the usual fair of breakfast and a rendezvous with our friends at Alamo Square. A quick chill and recovery time here, some goodbyes, and Em gives us a lift down to Hyatt Embarcadero to pick up our ride for the next 7 days. The Suzuki Vitara would prove itself barely worthy of the terrain we were about to encounter. Brake odors, engine odors. What is this thing a V2. Anyway, we hopped in the car and cut our way back and forth until we got over near Fort Mason/Marina District and caught a view of the Wave Organ. Nestled out on a jetty past one of the yacht clubs, the wave organ has great 360 views of the city and the bay and the bridge. The great thing, no one goes there, and from the initial drive-by, no one was gonna be there we we arrived. Landing the Vitara at the end of the park located in between the Marina District and the Presidio, we walked west towards the end of the jetty. It was nice day with a bit of wind. Hazy. As we neared the end of the jetty numerous small sailboats were headed out for a regatta. Well guess what, all their friends and families were headed out to the wave organ to watch the regatta unfold. It really didn't matter for there was a small beach facing the Golden Gate and numerous wildflowers and rocks to explore. The extra crowd didn't dampen a single spirit. After a nice walk around the Presidio we headed back to the car and then for a place to park it near the apartment. How bout the luck to find one right in front on the street. Sweet!

The remainder of Sunday afternoon found us perusing the shops along upper Haight, with a one block detour to let Tanil contemplate 710 Ashbury and to pay my usual respects. The Grateful Dead - the embodiment of Americana. More shopping and an espresso/chai tea stop. I hit Amoeba Records and about lost my mind at the enormity of it all. Thankfully Tanil came to my rescue and reminded me that we had been wanting a burger joint since about noon. We walked on up to Cole/Carl and kicked it for a while at Burgermeister. Yummy! A nice walk home and that purty much put a cap on the night.

I've been sold on San Francisco, its probably my favorite city in America, and my top place that i would wish to live. Too bad the living conditions cost a fortune. Tanil was evenly impressed with the city on her first visit and is full bore, ready to return. Nice.

Tomorrow mornin' we'll get the tires warmed up for a trip north through wine country and furthur into the Redwoods and the Lost Coast.

Now that you made it through that, you can click here to go straight to pictures of the San Francisco leg of our trip. Login information is at the top of the screen.

King Curtis Fo Yo Ass

Here's a Fantastic post from "The B Side" regarding King Curtis, with
a bit of Sam Moore and Donny Hathaway content, sending me searching for an album.
I found it wildly wonderful this morning, therefore I needed to share.
Come get you some!

Gettin' There

So, I'm staying off the MOFRO for the rest of the week, only because in 72 hours I'll be in San Francisco in chill mode. Then on Saturday night at the Fillmore Auditorium, I'll make my first appearance at the famed venue. Even if I am only a spectator, it'll be just fine. JJGrey & MOFRO will be headlining a Saturday night show with Chuck Prophet in support. So, I'm off the 'FRO until then, which is fine. I've given the new album numerous spins, and listened to about everything thats gone up on the archive. Congratulations to everyone who helped make this happen.

Well, last weekend in Denver Colorado, pretty much everyone that played on the album showed up at the Cervantes Ballroom. Those lucky enough to attend got a glimpse into a MOFRO show with backing female vocals, something I dream of seeing. Hopes would be high for the likes of that to happen in San Francisco, where the famed Gloria Jones and Jackie LaBranch - both of JGB fame - could stop by for an inspirational. Anyway it goes down, I'm happy to get outta town and on the road, if only a wee bit of time. Time for my wife and I spend together jookin' and jivin' and just chillin out for a while.

Cheers all!

"The triumphant result strengthens Mofro's position as the most important rock force to come out of the deep South in a while"

Changing of the Tide

Comment: I'm gonna try to keep my words to a minimum, and keep this about the music, so if I wander, lemme know.

"This is gonna be a huge year for them." Matt said.
"No shit it is." I replied.

And thats pretty much been the conversation I've had with anyone this year whenever MOFRO comes up. JJGrey and MOFRO are firing on all cylinders. By first signing with Alligator Records and now with the addition of The Hercules Horns, this soul extravaganza is perched high in their new tour bus, stone cold chillin', bringin' there sound on a world tour. The year started out in Ft. Lauderdale, FL at the Culture Room, where MOFRO played a one night stand after scorchin' three sold out nights in Jacksonville Beach, FL, to close out 2006. The energy was high in South FL, and after a 2.5 hour show and 3 encores, most there knew we were gonna witness one hell of a year for this band.

Not less that a month later, JJGrey and MOFRO embarked on a FL hitting Gainesville, Orlando, Tallahassee, and two incredible nights at Skipper's Smokehouse in Tampa. With new album, "Country Ghetto", they cruised up the east coast ending with two shows at Harper's Ferry outside Boston.

So with much anticipation they made it back to South FL for the 5th annual Langerado festival. As the only band representin' all five years, and as the local favorite, more than an hour at the festival would have been great. Yet in the alloted hour, they delivered one of the most inspired sets of music to move me in a long while. And that was fresh off the heels of a near dawn ending set upon which the likes of Sharon Jones, Ivan Neville, Ben Ellman, Matt Grondig, Stanton Moore, Luther Dickinson, and Eric Krasno all shared the stage for a soul/jam down unlike any most there have ever seen. We we're tired and amped up all at he same time.

Thank you MOFRO for a wonderful weekend, again.

ya know
sushi rocks, but lately its gettin a little, let's say... BLAH

last night we got together with the neighbours, again, and a few other friends and did the sushi thing. I can eat tuna with the best of 'em, but i find myself increasing bored with sushi rolls, no matter what the fuck you put in 'em. and doin the gig at the house is a tad bit time consuming. Fuck, its a process to lay out a spread of sushi for 7 fools, especially when ones a vegetarian, and another a vegan.

i dig on UNI, and IKURA, and i love fish, purty much all of it; so why am I sour on the issue.

Maybe i'm on the rag.

Its just not the same.
Lately my home has turned into a Latino kitchen.
Well, sorta.

It's been taco night for over a week, with a small break for Indian which I totally killed. It was awesome. And out to brunch one day and that silly Italian food one night.

When I say, taco, I mean soft tortillas filled with various types of things.

One night it was a sauteed shrimp mix with cabbage and onions.
Then just a tofu/mustard/broccoli leaves sorta things.
Last night was fairly standard. Rice/beans/tofu crumbles w/ onions.
There were some sauteed squid if you pleased, also.

Its good, and its easy. Tomatoes are comin from the garden at a slow clip, and there's more coriander than anyone can handle. So with this much salsa in the production chain it was inevitable that the Ides of March were to be a Taco haven.

Broccoli and cauliflower leaves are abundant and saute up nice to add to any taco experience.

I write this because a few months ago it was MISO month, and it seemed that any and everything can be concocted to mix with MISO.

Anything.
See the parallel.
I do.

MISO is TACO.
TACO is MISO.
SOUTH FLORIDA
SEASON
GOIN OUT TO DINNER

Three things that just don't add up to a top notch time. Now if you have a gaggle of your best friends by you side, it sure does help.

Saturday 25 March 2006

So my wife decides to roll out and hang with a friend of hers and I'm a bit tired from yard work so I think I might stay in. A few minutes later, I have decided to crawl up to the local Italian joint for some grub. Close by, small, and normally not very full. Well four of us manage to seat ourselves after a calm 10 minute wait. Not bad so far. But from this point on you would never use the word service to describe how things panned out. After about 5 minutes I got up to grab us some menus. OK, did I actually just say "Excuse me" to one of the waitresses while tryin to get at the menus. OH SNAP! Setups, we need fork and knives to go along with this bruschetta someone dropped off at the table. I'll get it. A man who looks to be the manager informs me he'll take care of that, after I was on my back to distribute the goods. For the next 45mins to an hour things go well enough; a bottle of wine and some more bread. Orders are put in, and conversation to good. Orders were a mushroom/crab/risotto special, 2 pizza's, a tom.basil.buff, and a gnochhi with a ceasar. Simple, huh? About 45mins later the tom.basil.buff comes out, and I query about my salad. "oh, its on its way." another twenty and 2 pizza's arrive, then something that resembles the mushroom/crab/risotto, but its not. We question it and take it for what it is, and appetizer-one hour late. We continually laugh and enjoy the food we do have, all the while ordering another bottle of wine. So atmosphere and friends reigning supreme over customer service and CUSTOMER SERVICE. Seems normal. I forgot, my gnochhi, which they also forgot. How long does it take to bowl up some BOXED gnochhi and slather it with meat sauce(which you shoulda made early this AM). Well, it took an hour and 20 minutes. I boxed it and we scramed. I do need to say that the Gnochhi was delicious and i even ate it for breakfast the next day on the back porch watchin the sun shine down. Glory, Glory. So in sleepy Boynton Beach lies a restaurant called Bruschetti's. The food is good, not great. The atmosphere is quaint, Italian-American, and relaxing. Itsa half mile from the beach, so that at least stands for something, not sure what it is but I recognize it. Twice I have visited this establishment and twice failed to be impressed by the quality of service. The place is packed during season, as is every decent joint in town. So if Bruschetti's would hire some more staff, maybe 1-2 more for the floor and begin to work as a team instead of a bunch of old ladies showing up for work not having a clue how to take care of the patrons, then I may go back. Especially since its the closest Italian food outside my own kitchen. But for now, BLAH.
what are the odds I can use this blog for something constructive.

FOOD BLOG

maybe.

Dank ass food over the weekend.

Little Moir's Food Shack

then I whipped up some Tuscan Vegtable Soup

last night brought on the Calzones'. Shit I can put together some Zone's.

Maybe a FOOD BLOG is the way to go.
so the appraisal came back on the house at full sale price. wonderful. inspection is tommorow. sometimes our realtor doesnt listen, therefore he/she thought it was today. pay attention people. things are lookin good regarding this house. i am anxious to start truly diggin into things that can be done to improve the entire package. my vietnam vet has left us a pretty killer slate to add to. thank you.

elsewhere, more news of the downing street memo, and that it may start to surface in the mainstream press. more news here.

work is crankin and the sun is hot. ride on.

so we had some good luck swing our way. a 2 tour vietnam vet, navy diver came walking by when we were having our inspection. turns out he wants to sell his place. its cool. a lot nicer, tile throughout, hardwood inthe bedrooms. 2 beds/2 baths/living/kitchen/dining/family/screened porch. good god, he has a flag poll. steal your face will be up on jerry's birthday for sure. fully sodded yard, though no plants. i'll remedy that. gettin into this on at a lower price than the last. and it seems as though no major problems. i'll post pictures as soon as i can.

on another note. the eldest memeber of the High lineage passed away on Sunday. He was 96. Cornelius Hornblower is on his way to Indiana to be a pallbearer. Were always riding with ya brother. We love ya.

and...looks like rachel may have some offers on the house. if'n yer interested here a few
so we get an inspection on this house, and along the way an older man walks up lookin to sell his crib. next thing you know our realtor is talkin and figurin things out. so it comes to today, and we were puttin the mojo on this thing - cuz our inspection was a lil hairy, and it looks like the appraisal might not go - ok ok ...so major mojo to be able to check this house out and we get the call. we slip over and this place is so nice. an vietnam vet, navy, who has had his fair share of issues is living in it. dun a ton of work on the place and we were pretty blown away. it would be goin from a 3/2 to a 2/2. so that mean i gotta convert the garage for my office. but we will be picking up a ton of extra living space and a private back yard. whew! things are crazy. thanks everyone for spinnin good mojo. now we gotta sleep on this and get up with the good juice in the mornin'. peace y'all. Cornelius scooped up some webcams, so some video here shortly. sitting at work, still doin some diggin on the loan and the house. Peace all. UH

Read also that France decided not to support the EU constitution. I can handle that dont go along just to go along. Word is folks might start dumpin money into the dollar if this sticks. Oh well thats other shit. Gonna head over to tha beach with the ladies and soak some sun. For all you chillin alone today-for whatever reason-, we love you and keep yer spirits high.

I love you Mom.
